Urban Education

Program Description

The Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) in Urban Education prepares students to successfully engage the underpinnings of urban education and its impact on the many systems that influence students’ experiences in urban settings. Students will develop skills to holistically interrogate institutions in urban communities through critical questioning, field experiences, and student-centered classes. Our courses embrace theoretical and practical notions of education. Our focus on justice is deeply intertwined with Rutgers University-Newark's social mission that values individuals of diverse racial, ethnic, religious, and national backgrounds.

The program utilizes the humanities, broadly conceived, as the mechanism by which to address racialized, gendered, and intersectional experiences of disability identities, histories, and labeling practices. The program makes explicit the advancements that can be made through the creation of transformative educational practices on individual, social, and institutional levels. This program is open to anyone looking to learn more deeply and intentionally about urban education through an asset-based lens.
