First Generation Graduate Students

We are thrilled to announce the Graduate School's First Gen Grad Students Initiative, launched in Fall 2024. Specifically designed to support and encourage our first generation grad students, this project is bringing together students, faculty, and administrators to learn how best to support you! We understand the unique challenges and triumphs that first-generation graduate students face on their academic journey, and we are committed to providing comprehensive resources and fostering a supportive community to ensure your success.

 

What is the GSN First Generation Graduate Students Initiative?

Our program is designed to address the specific needs of graduate students who were the first in their families to earn a bachelor's degree. We recognize that these students often navigate unfamiliar academic, financial, and social landscapes. Through this initiative, we aim to:

• Provide Resources: We offer tailored resources and guidance to help first-generation graduate students thrive academically, professionally, and personally.

• Foster Community: We facilitate connections and networking opportunities among first-generation graduate students, faculty, and staff to create a supportive community where individuals can share experiences, seek advice, and celebrate achievements.

​

• Promote Advocacy: We advocate for policies and practices that promote equity and inclusion, ensuring that the voices and needs of first-generation graduate students are heard and addressed.

How Can You Get Involved?

Whether you are a first-generation graduate student, faculty member, staff member, or ally, there are many ways to get involved:

• Join Our Community: Sign up for our mailing list to learn more about upcoming initiatives and opportunities to connect with fellow first-generation graduate students and participate in events, workshops, and support groups.

• Share Your Story: We encourage first-generation graduate students to share their experiences, challenges, and successes to inspire and support others. Our plan is to feature several of your stories on our website!

• Volunteer: Faculty, staff, and alumni are invited to volunteer their time and expertise to mentor and support first-generation graduate students.

• Advocate: Advocate for policies and resources that support the needs of first-generation graduate students within Rutgers and beyond.
